Occupational Settings I am Interested In:

Having taught in a school setting for the majority of my career prior to OT school it is a setting that I enjoy working in.  The school setting that I was most recently involved with was a private non-for profit setting. We did not receive any state or federal funding. Funding for the school came from tuition, private donors, and or fund raisers. If  I were to go back into a school setting I would definitely be interested in exploring a non-traditional OT role. I have always enjoyed creating new programs and would be excited to work collaboratively with another OT or someone from another professional area to address areas of concern or needed awareness that would be beneficial for students. Teaching in a school would allow me to be on some what the same schedule as my children. I would then be able to feel like I were a better OT mom, in that I could help my children with their school needs just as I have helped other children with their school needs.
I am also interested in learning more about hand therapy and what all hand rehabilitation specialist do. I recently have been having some hand issues and it has made me realize first of all, that I have taken my hands for granted but it has also shone a light on just how important our hands are to everyday functions. And the feeling of confidence or lack of confidence that can come from how my hands perform a certain task.  As a hand specialist the setting probably would be different from the school setting that I am used to which might be scary at first but could also be just the right amount of change needed to keep my perspective on ideas fresh and evolving.
These are just two areas I am interested in as I contemplate where my soon to be new role as occupational therapist will take me. I would like to remain open to many possibilities as I move forward in this learning process - as you never know what might strike a cord and really resonate.
